How do you get an allotment?

Before you consider where you are going to get an allotment, you need to think about whether or not you need one.

1. You have your own small garden, which gets plenty of sun, and you don't mind it being turned into a vegetable plot. No, you do not need an allotment.

2. You have your own small garden which you are happy to be used as a vegetable plot, but it does not get much sun. Vegetables need a sunny plot. Yes, you need an allotment.

3. You have your own small garden, which may or may not sun, but you do not want to use it for growing vegetables. Yes, you need an allotment.

4. You have a large garden, with plenty of room for an allotment - and are happy for an area being devoted to vegetable growing. No, you do not need an allotment.

5. You have a large garden, with plenty of room for an allotment - but you like the idea of having a spot were you can 'get away from everything'. Yes. you need an allotment.

How to get an allotment
Contact your local parish council who will be able to advise you on availability of allotments in your area. Most councils and local authorities in England and Wales have a department which deals with the allocation of allotments. It may not be called the "Allotments Department". Frequently allotments are classified under Parks, Recreation, Leisure or Services. You can always give them a quick telephone call.
