Equipment needed for an
allotment
There is a vast array of equipment available to help you cultivate your allotment including hand tools and power tools.
Of course the snag with a lot of power tools is the lack of electricity on an allotment. So unless you have access to some sort of power source or generator, you will usually have to resort to battery or petrol driven equipment or stick with good old hand tools.
Basic equipment list
Here is a list of the basic equipment that you will need:
Shovel or spade
Hoe
Rake
Trowel
Pruning tools
Shears (for trimming grass paths around your allotment)
Fork
Canes
String or wire
Pen knife
Prices
You can spend as little or as much as you like on tools - it's really down to personal preference. Many of the larger supermarkets have good quality hand tools at a very reasonable price. If you are on a low budget, look out for tools at your local car boot sale or eBay. Also consider buying tools at the end of the gardening season when prices are reduced.
Other equipment
Other items to consider are:
Wheelbarrows
Pest control sprayers
Hose pipes
Watering cans
Soil testing kits
Canes
Plant labels
Flower pots
Seed trays
Maximum and minimum thermometer
Composters
Garden bench (or similar)
